Efforts to achieve a long-held ideal have led to a remarkable prototype of a High-Voltage Direct-Drive Amplifier running fully in
the digital signal domain with respect to an implemented Sample Rate Converter (SRC) and Multi-Bit PWM Modulator, in which
the HV Direct-Drive Amplifier comprising I2S, SPDIF and AES/EBU as an input may be thought of as a HV Power DAC for driving
an electrostatic loudspeaker (ESL) directly without any use of step-up transformer means and global feedback means.
The prototype of the HV Direct-Drive Amplifier is capable of generating a 3,2 kV p-p Multi-Bit PWM voltage swing in
a Single Ended setting (SE) and 6,4 kV p-p in a Bridge Tied Load setting (BTL).
The Multi-Bit PWM voltage swing in the Single Ended setting is obtained by means of four H8H™ power stages to form a MMC,
wherein the current handling capability of the MMC is a non-issue to drive a capacitive load of any known ESL.
Furthermore the prototype having a fourth order extraction filter with a linear-phase frequency response of DC to 68kHz (-3 dB) for demodulating the Multi-Bit PWM signal to reconstruct an amplified source signal, may generate in the single ended setting
a sinusoidal output swing of 2,9 kV p-p across the capacitive load of an ESL connected to an output of the extraction filter.
